The Socials

I deleted my Twitter account in 2022. Alas for what Twitter used to be. But I don’t regret it for a second. But where to find a new home? I made a CounterSocial account, I already had a Mastodon account so I used both of them and it was OK for a while. Then there was a flood of exodus from Twitter and I ended up switching to a different Mastodon server because of reasons that are nobody’s business. Then came BlueSky and Nostr. Nostr is cool but it was nothing but Tech Bros and BitCoin BS so yeah. Not a place for someone like me. Too bad, really. BlueSky was OK with a lot of limitations that they slowly resolved. Threads was a no go from the start. I don’t allow Meta products on my phone.

But there was just no way I could cross post to all these socials. Nostr is a shithole for normal people and I abandoned it after a month anyway. With some regret I gave up CounterSocial and stayed with Mastodon and BlueSky without doing anything on BlueSky. Then there was another mass exodus from Twitter and someone who is a IRL friend was there. And then another mass exodus and another and now BlueSky has a pretty decent base.

Now I’m using Mastodon and BlueSky and an app that will cross post and I have a bridge between the two socials. And that’s OK. BlueSky is currently winning the public destination contest, which I feel is a long-term bad thing. More on that in a minute. At the moment BlueSky has an enormous sex bot spam problem and those accounts have to be blocked one at a time. JFC. There is no way to make your account private to escape this onslaught. There is also no way to have follow-approval. It’s hell and if they don’t fix it, I’m going to stop going to BlueSky at all.

BlueSky in the long term is going to go the way of Twitter, I fear. It’s VC backed and VC wants profit no matter how much they have to fuck over privacy or who gets driven off. It makes me sad. Mastodon doesn’t have this bot problem. So I will be keeping my presence there. I like Mastodon much much better. Though I do have to go block Threads.net.
