My Dog’s Butt Exploded

Poor little doggo. She was scooting her butt on the ground so I took a closer look and she had one of those anal gland issues. I made a vet appointment, but it was five days away. The next day there was an abscess approaching the size of a ping pong ball so I called back and asked if I could get in earlier. Later that day, the abscess was “gone.”

The dog was not happy about having her sore butt looked at and cleaned out. At all, as you might imagine. But now she’s on antibiotics and feeling much better.

Back in the day making sure your pets stayed healthy didn’t risk breaking the bank but over the last 5 years or so, the necessary care for pets has been getting more and more expensive. Flea, tick, and heartworm meds are over $100 per pet. Our vet recently switched to this online pharmacy for re-ordering meds which you’d think would be a good thing except now I’m getting spammed by the pharmacy. JFK.

And don’t get me started about pet insurance. It’s not affordable for multiple pets and especially not affordable for older pets. I’ve done the math. I’d be better off with a Pet Health Savings Account than insurance. My dogs are older rescues with issues from having been in a truly horrible situation for some years before they were pulled from their previous home.

At the rate this is going, people with pets are going to start skipping care for their animals or just not have pets. Fuck VCs. Really.
